Update from the Tri-Agency Programs Secretariat's awards reconciliation team:
In the 2024 updates to the Tri-Agency Guide on Financial Administration (TAGFA), the section on Extension period for the authority to use grant funds was updated to clarify that requests for grant extensions, submitted by the administering institution on behalf of grant recipients will not be considered after the end date of a grant has passed. We would like to remind institutions that requests for such extensions must be made during the final year of the authority period to use grant funds, and prior to the end of grant date.
We understand that some institutions and recipients were not aware of this change. We have decided that until December 31, 2024, we will accept and consider extension requests for grants ending since April 1, 2024. This exception will not be extended.
The administering institution is responsible for submitting the extension request to the appropriate agency using the Grant Amendment Form. If the extension is not approved, the grant recipient will have three months to pay all expenses incurred before the grant end date. Please see the TAGFA, part 3, section on Extension period for the authority to use grant funds for full details and conditions.
To request an extension, please complete the Grant Amendment Form and send it to the NSERC and SSHRC Grants Administration team at grantsadministration@nserc-crsng.gc.ca.
