On January 4, 2019, the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC) will launch its next call for proposals under its Discovery Frontiers program. This round of funding will focus on antimicrobial resistance in the environment. Funding available is $1 million per year for four years. Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) occurs when microorganisms, such as bacteria, viruses or fungi, change in ways that reduce or eliminate the effectiveness of the antimicrobials used to treat infections. The broad use of antibiotics in human and veterinary medicine and in the agriculture has resulted in the rise of resistant populations which develop and spread. Poor infection control practices, inadequate sanitation and inappropriate food handling also encourage the spread of AMR.
